Lagos State government will start enforcing the ban on single use plastics commencing January, following December 2024 announcement by Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab. This move aims to address the growing environmental issues caused by plastic wastes and reckless disposal across the state.

The ban will cover items like disposable Styrofoam plates, cups, straws, cutlery, and plastic bags less than 40 microns thick. The decision to ban these items is due to a research that showed that Lagos generates over 13,000 tons of waste daily, with a significant portion being plastic.

To adapt to the ban, Lagosians will need to shift to more sustainable materials like paper bags, reusable shopping bags, metal or bamboo straws, and biodegradable food containers. The state government has initiated public awareness campaigns promote and encourage use of alternative packaging materials.

It is instructive to note that some major African cities, like Kigali, Rwanda, and Nairobi, Kenya, have successfully implemented similar bans, demonstrating the potential for positive change.
