The Comptroller General (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Kemi Nandap, has taken decisive action by ordering the immediate suspension of Mr. Okpravero Ufuoma, an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II), who was recently caught in a viral video soliciting a bribe from a traveler.

The incident, which has garnered widespread attention on social media, has been strongly condemned by Mrs. Nandap as a violation of the professional standards and ethics upheld by the NIS.

In a statement released by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr. Kenneth Udo, the CG expressed her deep disappointment over the officer’s conduct, labeling it as a significant challenge to the ongoing reforms aimed at improving service standards within the NIS. She made it clear that the actions depicted in the video are not reflective of the values of hospitality, reception, and courtesy that the NIS is committed to promoting.

Mrs. Nandap announced that Mr. Ufuoma has been indefinitely suspended while an orderly room disciplinary process is to be conducted in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules. She reiterated the NIS’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and its dedication to identifying and removing any corrupt elements within the service.

As part of efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future and to enhance the experience of travelers, Mrs. Nandap disclosed that the NIS is in the process of installing electronic gates (e-gates) at all international airports. This measure is expected to improve service delivery and reduce opportunities for misconduct among service personnel, aligning with the Federal Government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’.
