A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Society for Advancement of Democracy (SAD) has called on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to address the issue of alleged killing of unarmed protesters by the police, and the Army in the ongoing #endbadgovernance protest in the country.

Also Reacting to the President’s address to the nation on August 4 2024, the Group expressed concern that President Tinubu did not say anything on the allegations of killings and use of excessive force by security operatives, on some youths who are protesting against economic hardship.

Furthermore, SAD also frowned at the alleged clash of Nigerian youths, who are pro and anti #endbadgovernance protests.

The Chairman of the Group, Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu, who addressed Journalists in Abuja, noted that: “you don’t allow protests for and against at the same time and space, it is not good.”

He accused the government of taking the protesters and Nigerians for granted and noted that President Tinubu, should have addressed the nation before the protests, adding that addressing Nigerians at the middle of the protests is unfair to Nigerians and the protesters.

He alleged that the government is unwilling to address the demands of the protesters.

Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu pointed out that for President Tinubu to ask the protests to stop demonstrations, without delegating at least five government officials to hear out their grievances at the national stadium, where they were confined, showed unseriousness and unwillingness to settle the issue at hand.

“If he doesn’t do that, how would he know what they are saying and what he is addressing?

Although he noted that the President said so many good things in his broadcast, but wondered how those things would bring down inflation and address the immediate impact of rising cost of living.

“Throughout his broadcast, Mr President didn’t caution those using live bullets to kill people and he is expected to condemn the use of live bullets to kill people.

“See the way they killed people in the North, as if they weren’t human beings. Condolences are not necessarily, but stopping the killings,” he stated.

“They confined the protesters at the national stadium, but on their way to there, it was said that the police started shooting and throwing teargas at them.”

Advising the president to be serious in dialoguing with the protesters, SAD however advised the protesters to go about their protests peacefully.
