The Chairman, Conference of Directors/Chief Road Traffic Officers (a.k.a VIOs) of the Federation has noticed with concern, the growing trend of the use of government vehicle number plates on commercial vehicles plying Nigerian roads.

The National Chairman of the body, Engr. (Sir) Paul Ugbe Bepeh noted this during the courtesy visit to the Secretary, Joint Tax Board (JTB) in Abuja. 

The National Conference Chairman condemned the use of government vehicle number plates on commercial vehicles plying various roads across the nation, which according to him, apart from being illegal, poses security threat to the nation as it could facilitate illegal movement of prohibited items that could cause security threat to the populace.

The Chairman therefore, seeks the collaboration of security agencies in the bid to discourage this illegality by confiscating government number plates found on commercial vehicles. 

Speaking further, the Chairman directs all Road Traffic/Vehicle Inspection Officers nationwide to henceforth impound any commercial vehicle found with government number plates plying on the roads.

A press statement signed by the National Secretary, Mr. Durojaye Babawale Olalekan directs all the states/FCT road traffic officers/VIOs to be proactive in the prevention of road crashes by enforcing the regulation on road worthiness of vehicles and others that will improve safety of road users.
