The Lagos State government has vowed to enforce safety measures and clamp down on substandard boat operators following a series of boat fatalities that claimed several lives.
And since after the incidents, condolence messages have been pouring in from many quarters for the leadership and people of some riverine communities in Lagos State.
Amongst those who called on the monarch of Ibeshe Kingdom,HRH Oba Gausu Alani Rasaki, the Ovori of Ibeshe Kingdom was the Medical Director of Igbologun Medical Center, Doctor Gbolahan Nureni Sodipo who is also known as Dr. Creek due to his sustained work and commitment to the health and well-being of the indigent people in the riverine communities, especially in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Dr. Creek’s Igbologun Medical Center is also partnering with D-Degree Digital Hub to bring FCMB Easy Club to the vicinity.
One of such boat mishaps is the death of about 16 passengers after their boat capsized around Mile 2 area of Lagos State.
The boat was heading to Ibeshe in Ojo area from Mile 2. It is reported that the driver set sail rather late, at about 7 p.m., Friday, 8th July,2022.
Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) said that at about 7.45p.m., on Friday, it received a distress call of an incident on the waterways, which later revealed that a W19 passenger Fibre boat carrying 16 people capsized along the Ojo area of the state.
The passengers on board included little children.
Rescue operations were embarked upon by the Search and Rescue team of these agencies: Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), National Inland Waterways (NIWA), Nigerian Marine Police and the State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
It is, however unfortunate that these combined efforts could not prevent the number of casualties.
The FCMB Easy Club is an initiative of FCMB to empower farmers with farming facilities needed to produce farming growth and productivity.
This is one of the initiatives that seeks to move Nigeria away from a mono-culture of oil economy to a richly diversified economy driven by agriculture.
The ripple effect of this is food sustainability for community dwellers.
