The recent developments at Nigeria media behemoth, Daar Communications Plc, owners of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and RayPower, have sparked a significant family and corporate controversy. Raymond Paul Dokpesi Jr., the current chairman and son of the late founder, High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, has reportedly initiated the dismissal of several long-serving directors, including his stepmother, Chief (Mrs.) Tosin Dokpesi. This move has caused considerable unrest within the Dokpesi family and among the affected directors.

The decision to remove these directors, including Tony Akiotu, the Group Managing Director, as well as Ambrose Somide, Paulyn Ugbodaga, and Tony Uyah, is said to be part of a broader effort to refresh the company’s leadership, especially among those who have held executive positions for over a decade. The directors have been advised to proceed on leave, with their official retirement expected to take effect in November.

The decision has not been well-received by the family, particularly given the manner in which Chief (Mrs.) Tosin Dokpesi, a respected figure in the family and the community, has been treated. Family members are reportedly planning to appeal to Raymond Paul Dokpesi Jr. to reconsider his decision and to respect the legacy of his late father, who was known for his community leadership and care for people.

A family source who asked not to be named said, “the entire Dokpesi family and relations were so taken aback and jolted by the decision of the Junior. You know, our late brother was a high chief, community leader and lover of people. So, how can it be heard that his wife was just shabbily treated as this?”, he queried.

“I’m sure the elders will send a message to the chairman to respect the legacy of his late father and stop disgracing the family by reversing this unpopular decision. Madam Tosin is a pillar in this family and cannot be so treated like a rag”, he said.

This internal conflict comes at a challenging time for Daar Communications, which has been experiencing financial difficulties, culminating in a reported loss of N1.6 billion for the year ending December 31, 2023. The tension within the family and the company could have significant implications for the future of the media group.
