The House of Representatives has mandated the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to reconstruct Itori Bridge on Sango–Abeokuta Expressway.

Hon. Ibrahim A Isiaka, lawmaker representing Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency of Ogun State at the House of Representatives, in a motion during a plenary session today lamented the precarious condition of Itori bridge, on Sango–Abeoukuta Expressway, which he informed  has been closed in the past 15 months, thus subjecting motorists and commuters to traffic logjam and armed robbery.

He noted that there has been rising incidents of kidnapping, sexual molestation and accidents on the routes as a result of the bad state of the bridge.

He expressed concern that the expansion joints of the bridge and the bearings have worn out due to constant usage, a development, he said, creates serious hardship and affects socio-economic activities along the corridors of the acclaimed fourth busiest road in Nigeria.

The lawmaker pointed out the urgent to provide concrete structures, protection and rehabilitation against the exposed reinforcement repairs to cracks, maintenance of bearings and expansion joints on the bridge;

Consequently, the House in its resolution urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to urgently mobilize resources for condition assessment and commence immediate rehabilitation of the failed sections of the collapsed bridge in Ogun State.

The House further urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to comply with the resolution of the House, among the Special Project Unit’s (SPU) Intervention Programmes; and mandate the Committees on Works and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance and report back within three weeks for further legislative actions.
