The House of Representatives Committee on Ecological Fund has threatened to sanction government agencies who failed to appear before it to explain how ecology fund allocated to them were utilized.
The Committee said all relevant agencies of government yet to appear before the it, risked sanctions as it will evoke relevant sections of the Constitution empowering it to sanction agencies that continue to give flimsy excuses on why they have refused to appear.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon Ibrahim Isiaka issued the warning on Monday at a public hearing organized by his Committee on the need to Investigate the total consolidated Accruals and utilization of Ecological Fund, held at National Assembly in Abuja.
The Chairman stated that all relevant agencies of government yet to appear before it must appear unfailingly by Wednesday 9th Nov 2022.
“We expect government agencies to cooperate with us to give information on how Ecological Fund they received from the government have been utilized.
The Chairman had mandated the Federal Ministry of Health and Ministry of Niger Delta to immediately response to letters written to them on or before Wednesday this week or be ready to face sanctions from his Committee.
For their failure to appear in person, the Committee also summoned National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, North East Development Commission, NEDC, Ministry of Water Resources and others.
The summoned agencies are to appear in persons before the committee unfailingly by Wednesday 9th Nov.2022 by 10am prompt.
In his his earlier remarks, the Committee Chairman had informed that the purpose of his Committee is never to witch hunt anybody, ministry or agency but to ensure that accountability and transparency while spending public funds.
Other Lawmakers in the Committee who spoke while the hearing lasted emphasized that as parts of their mandate as Lawmakers is to ensure prudence in the management of public funds.
