BREAKING: VeryDarkMan Arrested, Charged to Court by VeryDarkUniformed Officers, for Wearing a Very Dark Uniform

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) recently detained and charged popular blogger and social media influencer Martins Otse, known as “Very Dark Man” (VDM), for allegedly impersonating a police officer by wearing a police uniform in a viral video.

It said, “In response to recent developments, VDM, whose real name is Mr. Martins Otse, is set to appear in court today following allegations of impersonation related to the unauthorized use of Nigeria Police Force uniforms in a viral social media video.

“The FCT Police Command is actively handling the case, underscoring the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to upholding the integrity of its symbols and preventing their misuse. Interested persons are encouraged to follow up on the proceedings as the case unfolds.”

The arrest followed VDM’s voluntary appearance at a police station in response to a summons. However, in a statement posted on X by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, he said VDM was detained after he voluntarily honoured a police invitation on Thursday.

The lawyer’s post read, “Our client, VDM, has been detained after honouring a police invitation just like yesterday. VDM has been consistent in stating that the Nigerian Police are our friends, even when we all know they are not.”

VDM had worn the uniform, portraying himself humorously as a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) of an “online division,” a move he later acknowledged as unauthorized.

But on Friday, VDM was arraigned in Court 1 of the Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, under charge number CR/510/2024.

However, the court granted him bail set at ₦2 million with additional conditions, stating that he must provide two sureties, both residing within Abuja’s municipal area, who must submit their passports and provide proper identification. The sureties are required to commit to ensuring VDM’s appearance throughout the trial.

VDM, before his arrest, publicly apologized to the police, emphasizing he was unaware of the need for formal authorization to use police attire in his content.

He also advised fellow content creators to seek proper clearance when using police or military attire in media projects.

The police, in a subsequent statement, highlighted the illegality of using police uniforms, badges, or insignia without authorization, emphasizing its commitment to investigating how VDM obtained the police attire used in his video.
