The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has banned media houses from playing the latest song, Tell Your Papa, released by Eedris Abdulkareem. – a song criticized and threw barbwire vibes at the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In it, Eedris directed Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, to speak to his father about the worsening state of the country.

In the satirical scathing song directed at the first son, Seyi Tinubu, aptly titled ‘Tell Your Papa’, Abdulkareem sings: “Seyi, tell your papa country hard. Tell your papa people dey die. Tell your papa this one don pass jagajaga.

“Seyi, how far? I swear your papa no try. Too much empty promises. On behalf of Nigerians, take our message to him; kidnappers dey kill Nigerians.

“Seyi, try travel by road without your security make you feel the pains of fellow Nigerians. You dey fly private jets, insecurity no be your problem,” he continues singing.

In a swift reaction, the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) sent out a circular signed by Susan Obi, Coordinating Director, Broadcast Monitoring dated 9th April, 2025, to media houses, preventing them from playing the song, stressing that the content is deemed inappropriate for broadcast due to its objectionable rendition.

The circular, which has sparked public reaction, was addressed to all broadcast stations and titled: restriction on broadcasting “tell your papa” by Eedris Abdulkareem, reads in full below:

“The National Broadcasting Commission has identified the song Tell Your Papa® by Eedris Abdulkareem, currently trending on social media, as content deemed inappropriate for broadcast due to its objectionable nature.

“It is therefore classified as Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB), as it violates Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

“The Commission requests that your station exercises discretion and refrains from airing this song to maintain responsible broadcasting standards.

“Your cooperation and commitment to upholding these standards are greatly appreciated”, advised the NBC letter.

Some commentators are miffed that the administration is scared of contrary narratives which reflects the true situation of things in the Nigeria, noting that leading members of the current didn’t hold back openly and defiantly demonizing former President Goodluck Jonathan, to the extent of parading a mock coffin of him.

Another said, ‘now that they’re being asked to drink a little of their own medicine, the spoon has magically become too long”, he said.

Another commentator said the ban is counterproductive because, “banning the song will obviously make it more popular as many people who did not know or hear of it will go out looking for it”, making the artiste trend more.
