The Nigerian Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15 July, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari is a significant national gesture. According to the statement issued by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, and confirmed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, the holiday serves as a tribute to Buhari’s leadership, democratic contributions, and national service.

This solemn declaration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, not only reflects continuity in acknowledging the efforts of past leaders but also aims to unite the country in remembrance of a man who was a former military Head of State (1983–1985) and later a democratically elected President (2015–2023).

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister said.

“As earlier announced, the Nigeria flag will fly at half-mast during the seven days of mourning period from Sunday 13th July, 2025, as approved by President Tinubu.
