Activist Randy Peters Supports Electoral Reforms, Demands Youth Harness Social Communities for a Stronger Political Voice

Popular social media influencer and activist Randy Peters, known as Randy Peter Akah (@randypeterz), has made a rallying cry to Nigerian youths to join the ongoing conversation for electoral reforms to combat bad governance and systemic corruption in politics. With an impressive followership of over 400,000 on Facebook, his campaigns, aptly captured in hastags: #noelectoralreformnoelection and #transmitresultslive are dedicated platforms demanding transparent elections, an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that’s truly independent and accountable for electoral malpractices.

“This is your fight,” Peters declared in a recent X post.

“The youth are Nigeria’s majority—your voice can force the National Assembly to act against oppression by those at the corridor of power.”

The 2023 elections exposed systemic flaws, with only 24.9 million of 94 million registered voters exercising their universal adult suffrage, a disturbingly low turnout which many post-election analysts have attributed to logistic challenges such as late accreditation, delayed polling and technological failures.

It is against this unavailing backdrop that Peters is urging youths to register to vote, spread the message of his campaign and importantly, engage their elected legislators to push for reforms, stronger electoral laws that will ensure real-time results transmission and improve the process of accountability of elected officials.

Drawing from recent elections across the tiers of government of electoral positions, Peters calls for democratic Epistocracy, a system where competent knowledge-based leaders are chosen over universal suffrage which usually encourages vote-buying and intimidation.

The activist canvass for inclusivity of more women and societal vulnerable to deepen the conversation in the Nigeria’s democratic journey. He highlighted that the low representation in the national assembly calls for concessionary slots for more women. Presently, we have about four senators of 109 or thereabout and about 14 in federal house of representatives. This kind of low representation has resulted in intimidation and abuse of the womenfolk, as can be easily referenced with the recent faceoff between NASS leadership and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, Nigeria’s first female senator from Kogi, which to our national shame is now seen as persecution.

Women in government roles continue to face discrimination. President Tinubu appointed only a handful into his 45-seat ministerial cabinet. It is this system exclusion that is motivating Peters in his advocacy for legislative reforms to elevate women as viable candidates.

With about 76% of new voters in 2023 under 34, Randy Peters believe the time is apt for youths to be at the vanguard of determining the political direction of the country through coordinated platforms and political awareness initiatives. He cited movements like #EndSARS and the 2023 Obidient campaign as veritable reference point of his clarion call.
