Sequel to the historic quadruple celebration of international martial arts, Great Warrior/Grandmaster Ohio-Michael and African Goju Nigeria hosted a special awards ceremony to celebrate African Goju landmarks, at the Subterranean Underground Lounge of the Diamond Hotel, Anthony Village, Lagos.

At the event, a plaque, certificate and cash prize were presented to the winners of the African Goju Kata of the Year 2024, while recipients of the Honourary Black Belt Award were decorated with their black belts and presented with official certificates.
Receiving the awards on behalf of the winning trio and the honorary awardees (RaeShawn, Roland, and Pearl), Grandmaster Ohio-Michael expressed gratitude to Prof. Danny Gwira and the entire African Goju and South American Goju community for the recognition given to his students. He noted that three awardees had trained intensively for several months in preparation for their award-winning performance and that their victory brought him deep fulfillment.

Speaking on the honorary awards, Grandmaster Ohio-Michael praised the camaraderie between African Goju and other martial arts systems in Nigeria, stressing that the mutual respect and collaboration that birthed these recognitions are ideals deeply rooted in decades of African Goju history in the country.
He highlighted that a unique distinguishing feature of African Goju and South American Goju in comparison to Chinese Goju, Japanese Goju or any other Asian or Korean martial arts, is the language of instruction. “The Asian or Korean brand of martial arts rely on their indigenous language, cultural ethos and symbols for instruction and practice. But African Goju and South American Goju are rooted in our native or common language of instruction where we train and operate”, he said.

The survival systems now fondly known as African Goju and South American Goju continues to build upon the pathfinder vision of Prof. Danny Gwira, who, in 1975, founded the Martial Arts Institute in Accra, Ghana, with the goal of developing an Africa-centric self-defence platform.
