President Bola Tinubu on Thursday swore in Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his confirmation by the Senate last week.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the State House Council Chambers during an expanded meeting of the National Economic Council. Amupitan, 58, succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose five-year tenure expired recently.

“Your nomination to this important role and the subsequent confirmation by the Senate is a testament to your capacity and the confidence reposed in you by both the executive and legislative arms of government,” Tinubu said while administering the oath. He charged Amupitan to “protect the integrity of our elections and electoral process and strengthen the institutional capacity of INEC.”

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and several cabinet ministers.

Amupitan’s appointment was endorsed by the National Council of State before his Senate screening on October 16, where he was grilled on electoral reforms and credibility. The Senate confirmed him via voice vote, led by Akpabio.

A Professor of Law at the University of Jos and Senior Advocate of Nigeria since 2014, Amupitan hails from Kogi State and specializes in company law, evidence, corporate governance, and privatization. During screening, he pledged to strengthen the Electoral Act for transparent polls and denied any role in the 2023 presidential election petitions.

Amupitan assumes office immediately, facing upcoming polls including the Anambra Governorship Election in November 2025 and FCT Area Council Elections in February 2026.
