Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), took over his defense today after his entire legal team withdrew from his terrorism and treason trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Lead counsel Kanu Agabi (SAN) informed Justice Binta Nyako that Kanu reclaimed his case file and opted for self-representation. “He has decided to conduct his defence by himself. We respect his decision,” Agabi said.

Kanu confirmed: “I will represent myself for now.” He declined the judge’s offer of a court-appointed lawyer and immediately challenged the court’s jurisdiction, citing violations of Nigeria’s Constitution and international law.
The court adjourned to October 24 for Kanu to open his formal defense.
On October 21, Kanu filed a motion listing 11 high-profile witnesses, including former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former DSS Director-General Yusuf Bichi. He requested 90 days to conclude his defense.
The charges, reduced to seven, include treasonable felony and terrorism.
Agabi told journalists outside court: “The matter is in the hands of God.”
Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 after fleeing bail in 2017. A medical panel declared him fit for trial on October 16.
