BREAKING: Senate Confirms 64 Ambassadorial Nominees, Including 34 Career and 30 Non-Career

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointments of 64 ambassadorial nominees forwarded by President Bola Tinubu, comprising 34 career diplomats and 30 non-career appointees.

The confirmation followed the presentation and adoption of the report by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Abubakar Sani Bello (APC, Niger North).

This brings the total number of confirmed nominees to 67, after the Senate earlier approved three non-career ambassadors on December 16: Lateef Kayode Kolawole Are (Ogun), Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu (Jigawa), and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke (Oyo).

The newly confirmed career ambassadors include Arewa Esther (Oyo), Adeola-Ibrahim Mopelola (Ogun), Ramat Omonbolale (Lagos), Monica Okechukwu Enebechi (Anambra), Adams Jane Basset (Cross River), Mohammed Lele (Bauchi), and Muhammad Dahiru (among others).

The non-career nominees feature prominent figures such as former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode, former presidential aide Reno Omokri, former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and others including Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo) and former Ekiti First Lady Erelu Angela Adebayo.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio congratulated the confirmed nominees, urging them to represent Nigeria creditably in their postings and advance the country’s foreign policy interests.

The appointments aim to fill long-vacant positions in Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad, many of which have been without substantive ambassadors since the recall of envoys in 2023.
