Arsenal remain six points clear at the top of the Premier League after a tense 0-0 draw with title rivals Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night, January 8, 2026 but failed to capitalise on Manchester City’s earlier slip-up against Aston Villa.

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated possession and created the better chances, with Bukayo Saka twice denied by Alisson Becker and Gabriel Martinelli hitting the post in the second half. However, Liverpool’s resolute defence, marshalled by Virgil van Dijk, held firm to earn a valuable point.

The result means Arsenal stay six points ahead of Liverpool (who have a game in hand) and maintain their cushion over Manchester City, who were held 1-1 earlier in the day preventing the Gunners from extending the gap to eight points.

Arteta admitted post-match frustration: “We did everything to win the game except score. We were the better team, but credit to Liverpool they defended well. The gap stays the same, but we showed we can compete at the highest level.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his side’s resilience: “Coming to the Emirates and keeping a clean sheet against this Arsenal team is a big point. We’re still in the race.”

The draw keeps Arsenal unbeaten at home this season and extends their strong run against top sides, but fans will feel two points dropped in a match they largely controlled.
