The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has stated that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State does not require the endorsement or permission of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other political party of his choice.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, made the declaration in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, amid growing speculation that the governor may defect from the NNPP to the ruling APC.

Johnson described the rumours linking Kwankwaso’s approval to Yusuf’s political decisions as “misleading and unnecessary,” emphasising that the governor, as an elected executive, enjoys full autonomy in his political choices.

“Governor Abba Yusuf is the duly elected governor of Kano State under the platform of the NNPP. His political future and affiliations are his personal prerogative. He does not need the blessing, endorsement, or clearance of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso or anyone else to take any decision regarding his political career,” Johnson said.

The statement comes against the backdrop of the long-standing political relationship between Governor Yusuf and his former mentor, Senator Kwankwaso, who founded the Kwankwasiyya movement and played a pivotal role in the NNPP’s emergence as a major force in Kano politics.

Recent reports have suggested tensions within the party, with some quarters alleging that Kwankwaso has been exerting influence over the governor’s administration and political direction.

The NNPP spokesperson reiterated the party’s support for Governor Yusuf’s leadership while affirming that the governor remains committed to delivering good governance to the people of Kano.

“Whatever decision Governor Yusuf takes in the future, it will be in the best interest of Kano State and its people. The NNPP remains proud of his achievements and will continue to support his administration,” Johnson added.

Governor Yusuf has not publicly commented on the speculation, but political observers believe any potential move could reshape the dynamics in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections.
