Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has filed a lawsuit against the leadership of the FCT workers’ unions over their ongoing indefinite strike, which has paralysed activities in many government offices and public institutions in Abuja.

The suit, filed on Thursday, January 23, 2026, at the National Industrial Court in Abuja, seeks an order declaring the strike illegal and restraining the unions from continuing the industrial action.

According to court documents sighted by DDNewsOnline, Wike is accusing the unions of failing to follow due process under the Trade Unions Act and the National Industrial Court Act before embarking on the strike.

The minister is also seeking damages for what he describes as “economic sabotage” and disruption of public services caused by the strike.

The FCT workers, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and other affiliate unions, declared the indefinite strike on January 10, 2026, over unpaid allowances, poor welfare, and failure to implement the new minimum wage for FCT workers.

The action has led to the closure of many Area Councils, health centres, and other critical services, with residents complaining of hardship.

Reacting to the lawsuit, the FCT NULGE Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Yusuf, described the move as “an attempt to intimidate and silence workers,” insisting the strike is legitimate and in line with labour laws.

“We have exhausted all avenues of dialogue. The minister refused to meet our demands. We will not be intimidated,” Yusuf said.
The case is expected to come up for hearing soon, as the industrial court fast-tracks labour disputes.

This legal action adds to the growing tension between the FCT administration and organised labour, amid broader national labour unrest over wages and welfare.
