Former UK Councillor Pleads Guilty to Multiple Rapes and Sexual Offences Against Ex-Wife Over 13 Years

A former councillor in the United Kingdom has pleaded guilty to a string of serious sexual offences, including multiple counts of rape, committed against his ex-wife over a 13-year period.

The defendant, whose identity is protected by reporting restrictions until sentencing, entered the guilty pleas at the Crown Court on Thursday, January 23, 2026. The offences spanned from 2008 to 2021 and involved repeated acts of rape, sexual assault, controlling and coercive behaviour, and threats to kill.

The court heard that the survivor endured years of systematic abuse while married to the former local authority representative. She reported the crimes after leaving the relationship and seeking support from specialist domestic abuse services.

Prosecutors described the case as one of the most prolonged and serious examples of domestic sexual violence to come before the courts in recent years. The defendant, who served as a councillor in a borough in northern England until 2019, had denied the allegations for several years before changing his plea on the first day of what was scheduled to be a full trial.

The judge adjourned sentencing to a later date to allow for the preparation of pre-sentence reports and victim impact statements. The defendant was remanded in custody.

Detectives from the force that led the investigation praised the survivor’s courage, stating: “This was sustained, calculated abuse over more than a decade. The victim’s bravery in coming forward has brought this offender to justice.”

The case has renewed public attention on the hidden scale of sexual violence within long-term relationships and the challenges survivors face in reporting historical abuse.
