Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), have called on Nigerians to embrace the newly implemented tax reform laws, describing them as essential for national development and fiscal sustainability.
Speaking at a public enlightenment forum on the tax reforms in Lagos on Wednesday, January 22, 2026, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the changes effective January 1, 2026 would reduce multiple taxation, ease the burden on low-income earners and small businesses, and generate more revenue for critical infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security.
“The new tax system is not designed to punish Nigerians; it is designed to make life better for all of us. By eliminating duplication, improving transparency, and widening the tax net fairly, we can fund the kind of development Lagos and Nigeria deserve. I urge every citizen to comply willingly it is our collective responsibility,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Chief Wole Olanipekun, a respected legal luminary, echoed the governor’s call, emphasising that the reforms align with global best practices and constitutional provisions on taxation.

“Taxation is the lifeblood of any serious nation. The new laws provide clarity, reduce arbitrary levies, and protect vulnerable groups. Resistance based on misinformation will only hurt us all. Let us embrace this change with understanding and patriotism,” Olanipekun said.
The forum was part of ongoing nationwide sensitisation efforts by the Federal Government and state authorities following controversies over alleged discrepancies in the gazetted versions of the four tax bills.
While some civil society groups and organised labour continue to demand a review, the Lagos State Government maintains that the reforms are progressive and inclusive.
