Former Arsenal star and Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even as the team awaits FIFA’s final decision on their protest against DR Congo.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with DDNewsOnline on Friday, February 6, 2026, Iwobi said the Super Eagles remain focused and united despite the uncertainty surrounding their qualification status after the controversial 1-1 draw in Kinshasa on November 15, 2025.
“We are hopeful. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) formally protested the match result, alleging that DR Congo fielded an ineligible player (Chancel Mbemba) and that refereeing decisions (including a disallowed Super Eagles goal and a questionable penalty) unfairly influenced the outcome.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has been reviewing the case for nearly three months. A ruling is expected within the next two weeks, with possible outcomes including:
Upholding the result (DR Congo qualifies).
Awarding Nigeria a 3-0 walkover win (Nigeria qualifies directly).
Ordering a replay (less likely).

Iwobi, who scored in the first-leg 2-1 win in Uyo, acknowledged the tension but urged calm: “We’ve done our part on the pitch. Now it’s about trusting the process. Whether we go through the protest or through the play-offs, we are ready. The Super Eagles spirit is alive we’ve come back from tougher situations.”
The midfielder also praised coach Eric Chelle’s tactical approach and the team’s resilience during the AFCON 2025 campaign, where Nigeria reached the semi-finals before losing to Morocco.
Nigeria currently sits second in Group D with 10 points from six matches, level on points with Rwanda but behind leaders Libya on goal difference. A favourable FIFA ruling would see Nigeria top the group and qualify automatically.
