Barely one week to the scheduled All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congresses across the country, the Ondo State chapter of the party has been plunged into a fresh leadership crisis, with some key stakeholders threatening to boycott the exercise and organise parallel primaries if their grievances are not addressed.

The brewing tension centres on allegations of imposition, lack of internal democracy, marginalisation of certain zones and groups, and disagreement over the composition of congress committees and delegates.
Several leaders from Ondo South and Ondo Central senatorial districts accuse the state leadership (loyal to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa) of planning to handpick candidates and delegates ahead of the congresses.
A faction led by some former commissioners, House of Assembly members and party elders has demanded the dissolution of the current state working committee and the reconstitution of congress committees to reflect “fair representation.”
Threat of parallel congresses: The aggrieved group has warned it will conduct parallel ward congresses on the same day (February 18, 2026) if the state executive refuses to accommodate their demands.
Zoning agitation: Calls for power to shift to Ondo South in 2028 are intensifying, with some stakeholders insisting the current leadership is working against that aspiration.
Pro-Aiyedatiwa faction: Describes the threats as “empty noise from disgruntled elements who lost out in previous arrangements.” They insist the congresses will hold as scheduled under the guidelines issued by the national leadership.
Aggrieved group spokesperson: “We will not allow imposition. If they insist on going ahead with a flawed process, we will hold parallel congresses and send our list to the national secretariat. The party belongs to all of us, not a selected few.”
APC National Leadership: Yet to issue an official comment, but sources say the NWC is monitoring the situation closely and may send a monitoring team to Ondo to prevent a repeat of past factional congresses.

The Ondo APC crisis is the latest flashpoint in the party’s internal challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections, following similar tensions in Rivers, Kano, and other states.
Ward congresses are scheduled nationwide for Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as part of the party’s preparations for the 2027 polls.
This is a developing story.
