The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Nigeria, Gholamreza Raja, has strongly criticised the recent United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Iran’s military actions in the Gulf region, describing it as “one-sided,” “politically motivated,” and reflective of “double standards” within the Council.

In an exclusive interview with Punch Online on Monday, March 16, 2026, Ambassador Raja argued that the resolution adopted on Wednesday failed to address the root causes of the crisis or acknowledge what he called “acts of aggression” against Iran.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the recent resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council, which condemns Iran’s defensive actions in response to regional developments, as a one-sided and politically motivated measure that does not reflect the realities on the ground,” Raja stated.

He added “The resolution has been drafted without due regard to the root causes of the crisis and the acts of aggression carried out against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and therefore represents yet another example of a selective approach and double standards within the Security Council.”

The ambassador insisted that Iran’s actions were carried out solely in exercise of its inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

“It is evident that the responsibility for escalating tensions in the region lies with those parties whose provocative and aggressive actions have contributed to instability and insecurity,” he said.

Raja reiterated Iran’s commitment to international law and peaceful conflict resolution: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently emphasised the importance of respecting the principles of international law, preserving regional peace and stability, and resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means, while at the same time reserving its legitimate right to defend its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.”

The ambassador also addressed Qatar’s eighth formal complaint to the United Nations and the Security Council alleging repeated Iranian missile and drone attacks on its territory. Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, had described the actions as a “blatant violation of national sovereignty” and a “direct threat to security and territorial integrity.”

Raja countered: “The Islamic Republic of Iran reiterates that its actions were directed solely at military targets associated with the United States and were carried out within the framework of its inherent right to self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.”

He added that Iran had no intention of targeting neighbouring countries and placed high value on its relations with Qatar and other Gulf states: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention of targeting neighbouring countries and continues to attach great importance to its friendly relations and good-neighbourly ties with the countries of the region, including the State of Qatar.”

The UN Security Council resolution, presented by Bahrain and co-sponsored by 135 member states, was adopted with 13 votes in favour, with Russia and China abstaining. It strongly condemned what it described as “egregious attacks by the Islamic Republic of Iran” against Gulf countries and Jordan, reaffirmed support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states in the Gulf Cooperation Council and Jordan, and called for an immediate halt to hostilities.

Iran has consistently maintained that its military operations were defensive responses to aggression, while the U.S.-led coalition has justified its actions as necessary to counter threats to regional and global security.
