In a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, 17 members of the House of Representatives have officially defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The defections were announced on Tuesday during plenary by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who read out the formal notices from the lawmakers.

This latest wave of cross-carpeting comes amid ongoing turmoil within the ADC following the exit of key opposition figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who recently moved to the NDC.
Sources close to the defectors cited internal leadership crises, factional disputes, and legal uncertainties rocking the ADC as major reasons for the switch. Many lawmakers are seeking a more stable platform as parties intensify preparations for the next electoral cycle.

The move further strengthens the NDC’s growing presence in the National Assembly and signals a major fragmentation in the opposition bloc that had initially coalesced around the ADC.
Deputy Speaker Kalu, while reading the letters, noted the constitutional provisions allowing such defections and welcomed the development as part of the democratic process.
