The Federal Government has set the minimum admission score at 150 for both public and private universities in Nigeria for the 2026 academic session.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the decision on Monday at the ongoing 2026 admission policy meeting organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja.

Alausa also pegged the minimum cut-off mark for colleges of nursing at 150, while polytechnics were given a cut-off of 100. The minister warned that any institution admitting students below the approved benchmarks would face sanctions.
The committee further ruled that institutions are free to conduct additional screening for candidates but must not charge more than N2,000.

On admission ratios, the stakeholders maintained a 60:40 Science to Arts ratio for conventional universities and colleges of education. Specialised universities and polytechnics are to maintain an 80:20 ratio.
The 2026 cut-off marks remain the same as those approved for the 2025 admission cycle for universities.

After the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) each year, JAMB convenes the policy meeting where tertiary institutions propose cut-off marks for their respective categories, which are then deliberated upon and finalised.
The latest decision is expected to guide the admission process for the 2026/2027 academic session across all tertiary institutions in the country.
