Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane has urged his players to end a turbulent campaign on a high note by defeating Manchester City in Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

The Blues head into the showpiece encounter without a win in their last seven Premier League games and currently sit in ninth place, with virtually no chance of securing Champions League qualification. For McFarlane, the final represents a golden opportunity to deliver silverware and restore pride at Stamford Bridge.

“These players know what’s at stake. It’s been a difficult season, but a win on Saturday changes the narrative,” McFarlane told reporters on Friday. “We’re facing the best team in the country, but finals are about moments, and we’ll be ready for ours.”

McFarlane is currently in his second spell as interim boss. He first stepped up from his role as Under-21 coach in January to replace Enzo Maresca, then returned to the dugout in April after Liam Rosenior’s brief tenure ended. His primary focus has been on stabilising a squad plagued by injuries, inconsistent form, and off-pitch uncertainty.

Chelsea’s recent league struggles have increased pressure on the team, with fans growing increasingly frustrated. However, a victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City would not only secure the FA Cup but also provide a significant morale boost ahead of a crucial summer rebuild.

Manchester City arrive at Wembley as strong favourites, chasing a domestic double. Despite this, McFarlane believes Chelsea’s underdog status could work to their advantage.

“Nobody expects us to win. That can free the players up to play with confidence,” he said. “We respect City, but we don’t fear them.”

The FA Cup final is scheduled to kick off at 3:00 PM BST on Saturday. A win for Chelsea would mark their ninth FA Cup title and secure a place in next season’s Europa League.
