Residents of Iluke community in Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State are mourning the killing of three people, including a vice principal, following a deadly attack by armed assailants in the early hours of Wednesday.
Community sources identified one of the victims as Mr. Gani Anifowose, Vice Principal of Government Secondary School, Iluke. He was killed alongside two other residents during the assault.

The attackers reportedly operated for several hours, creating panic in the community. Some residents alleged that students scheduled to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper were targeted for abduction.
Reacting to the incident, the Kogi State Government said security operatives foiled an attempted mass abduction of students. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, revealed that the attackers disguised themselves in military uniforms to gain access to the community.

According to the government, three community members lost their lives, but security personnel successfully rescued the students who were being taken into the bush. One of the attackers was reportedly killed during a gun battle, while others escaped with injuries.
The government has commended military personnel, local vigilantes, hunters, and other security operatives for their swift response, which prevented further casualties.

The attack comes barely two months after Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Igboho, visited Kabba (Okun Land) in April 2026 to meet traditional rulers over rising security concerns affecting Yoruba communities in Kogi State and beyond. Igboho’s visit was part of efforts to address banditry and kidnapping in the region.
Many residents now see the latest incident as a stark reminder of the security challenges Igboho highlighted during his visit, with calls growing louder for stronger collaboration between security agencies and community leaders.

The Kogi State Government has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information, while assuring that efforts are being intensified to track down the fleeing attackers and bring them to justice.
