Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has finalised a possible ‘AA’ presidential ticket on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by selecting former Transportation Minister, Chibuike Amaechi, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.

The development, which comes after weeks of intense negotiations within the opposition coalition, positions Atiku and Amaechi to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the rival Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso in what is shaping up to be a three-way contest.

A close ally of Amaechi confirmed that the former Rivers State governor accepted the offer after Atiku assured him that the vice-presidential nominee would play extensive roles in both the campaign and a potential government.

This move is widely seen as Atiku correcting a missed opportunity from the 2023 cycle, when he declined to partner with Nyesom Wike, who emerged as first runner-up in the PDP presidential primary.

While initial speculations suggested a predetermined plan within the ADC to pair Atiku with Amaechi for a North-East/South-South balance, Amaechi had earlier ruled out a consensus arrangement, insisting on direct primaries.

Reacting to the pairing, ADC chieftain Eze Chukwuemeka Eze dismissed earlier comments by party stalwart Dele Momodu suggesting Amaechi had rejected the VP slot, describing such remarks as personal opinions that could create unnecessary tension within the party.

In a separate statement to mark Democracy Day on June 12, Atiku urged Nigerians to stand up against bad governance, reject the politics of intimidation, and resist every manifestation of democratic backsliding.

He said over the past three years, the APC administration had orchestrated efforts to weaken opposition parties through manufactured leadership crises, orchestrated defections, political intimidation, and the abuse of state institutions.

Atiku added that institutions meant to serve the people impartially had been turned into instruments of partisan warfare.
