Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has called for the immediate redeployment of the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, accusing him and some officers of partisanship and failure to curb rising political violence in the state.

The governor made the demand on Friday while receiving a high-powered delegation from the Nigeria Police Force led by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the ICT Department at Force Headquarters, Adegoke Fayoade, at the Government House in Osogbo.

In a strongly worded statement signed by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke said political thuggery and violence must not only stop but that perpetrators must be arrested and prosecuted.
“You are in this state at a time negligence and partisanship of some of your officers have worsened political violence in the state,” Adeleke said.

The governor listed three unresolved political murders in recent weeks — Eluyera in Ikire, Ezekiel in Ilobu, and Aderogba in Esa Oke — noting that despite the suspects being well known, no single arrest has been made.

He further alleged that political thugs have been driving around towns shooting sporadically and destroying billboards of the Accord Party, while the police command allegedly looks the other way.
“Only in Osun state do we have police operatives eager to arrest Accord members on the most minor of grounds but has yet to arrest a single suspect in a series of murders and gun attacks,” the governor lamented.

Adeleke urged the visiting DIG to convey the state government’s position to the Inspector-General of Police, stressing the need for a reshuffle of the state police command to guarantee impartial policing and free, fair elections.

He promised that any act of murder or unlawful conduct would be thoroughly investigated and perpetrators prosecuted.
“I am assuring you that the police will live up to the expectation. The police commissioner and his men will perform their duties in line with the constitution and in line with the rule of law,” Fayoade stated.

The delegation also included the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone XI Headquarters, Osogbo, Akinyele Fasuba.
