Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the President of Senegal, has been elected as the chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). This election marks a significant diplomatic success for Senegal, as it now leads both the regional group and its executive commission.
Faye was selected on Sunday during the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Lungi, Sierra Leone. He takes over from Julius Maada Bio, the President of Sierra Leone, and will oversee the 15-member organization for the upcoming year.

In another positive development for Senegal, Birame Diop, a former minister of the Armed Forces, was elected president of the ECOWAS Commission for the term from 2026 to 2030. This is a historic achievement as it is the first time Senegal has held this top position since ECOWAS was founded in 1975.
Diop will succeed Gambian diplomat Omar Touray, who has been serving as commission president since 2022.

As chairman of ECOWAS, Faye, who is 46 years old, will steer the organization’s political direction during a period when West Africa faces challenges such as security threats and political unrest while also working to improve regional economic cooperation.
In a statement from the Senegalese presidency, Faye expressed his gratitude for being chosen and thanked other leaders for their trust in his country.

“I humbly accept the trust our country has received in taking on the presidency of ECOWAS. I appreciate my fellow Heads of State and Government for their confidence in me and for the teamwork spirit we shared,” he stated.
Faye also extended his congratulations to Diop on his election and offered his support.
“I congratulate General of the Army Birame Diop on becoming president of the Commission, and I promise him my complete backing,” he mentioned.

As noted by the Senegalese presidency, Faye aims to focus on enhancing collective security, promoting economic independence, and honoring the vision set forth by the founding leaders of ECOWAS.
The Senegalese leader emphasized his dedication to creating a united and reconciled West Africa as the regional group works to restore unity after years of political strife and constitutional challenges in some areas.
