Chief Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi and Barrister Azeez Yusuf have rejected their expulsion from the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the Lagos State chapter of the party, describing the action as belated and politically unnecessary.
The duo, in a statement signed by them, said they had resigned their membership of the APC in July 2026, weeks before the party announced their purported expulsion on September 23.
They said their resignation and subsequent defection to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) had already been publicly reported, questioning the basis for the APC’s decision to expel them after they had left the party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, we resigned from the APC in July 2026, weeks before the Party announced our purported expulsion on September 23,” they said.
According to them, they had communicated their decision to leave the APC and had subsequently joined the APM, adding that the latest announcement did not alter their political status.
“The question, therefore, is simple: How can a Party expel people who had already resigned from its membership?” they asked.
Egunjobi and Yusuf also linked their departure from the APC to grievances arising from the party’s primary elections, alleging that they won the primaries in their respective constituencies but were subsequently denied the opportunity to proceed.

They said they had sought redress through petitions, representations and press conferences, while repeatedly appealing to the party leadership to resolve the issues internally.
“Unfortunately, our concerns were not meaningfully addressed. There was no genuine engagement, no satisfactory resolution and no meaningful effort to restore confidence in the process,” they said.
The two former APC members said they eventually decided to leave the party after exhausting what they described as available avenues for resolving their grievances.
They argued that the September 23 announcement could not alter the circumstances surrounding their departure, describing it as an attempt to “rewrite a political history that had already moved on.”

They also raised concerns about what they described as the implications of the expulsion for internal democracy, due process and the freedom of party members to make political choices.
“To announce the expulsion of people who had resigned weeks earlier is not a demonstration of political strength,” they said.
Egunjobi and Yusuf further described the action as a “disturbing manifestation of political impunity,” alleging that it sought to create the impression that a political decision had been imposed on them.
They, however, said they would not be intimidated by the development, maintaining that they had no regret about their decision to leave the APC.

The duo also defended their defection to the APM, arguing that movement between political parties was a familiar feature of Nigerian politics.
They cited the political trajectories of several politicians, including Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Dr Wale Ahmed, Yinka Ogundimu, Jubril AbdulKareem and Sola Osolana, as examples of individuals who had operated across different political parties.
“If political movement is acceptable when others do it, why is our own decision suddenly being presented as an offence deserving expulsion?” they asked.
They maintained that their decision to leave the APC was based on their political circumstances and unresolved grievances, stressing that it was not intended as hostility towards political leaders or candidates they continued to support.

The two also declared continued support for President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Senator Idiat Adebule and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa.
They said their departure from the APC should not be interpreted as a rejection of the political leadership or wider political project associated with the individuals.
“Indeed, we are currently working for the success of the Tinubu/Hamzat political project in Agege despite having left the APC,” they said.
According to them, leaving the APC did not amount to abandoning their political relationships, principles or preferred candidates.
“We left a party; we did not abandon our principles, our relationships or the people we believe in,” they said.

They urged their supporters to remain calm and focused, saying they would continue to pursue their political aspirations under the APM platform.
The duo said they would remain focused on Agege, the welfare of their constituents and the development of Lagos State.
“Our message is simple: we resigned, we moved on, and we remain focused on the political future ahead,” they said.
