The POS Agent Aggregator Innovation Association of Nigeria (PAAIAN) has unveiled plans for a structured professional platform aimed at strengthening collaboration, innovation and opportunities within Nigeria’s POS aggregator and wider fintech ecosystem.

The association made this known at its “Fintech Without Borders: Building Trust in the Global Digital Economy” pre-launch event held on Friday, September 25, 2026, in Lagos.

The initiative brings together stakeholders across financial services, fintech, banking, technology, compliance, media and the digital-payment ecosystem, according to a statement issued by the association.

PAAIAN said the initiative is designed to provide a more organised platform for POS aggregators, sub-aggregators, operators and other stakeholders whose activities contribute to Nigeria’s digital financial ecosystem.

The association said its approach is built around collaboration, professionalism, innovation, compliance and shared standards, with the aim of creating stronger connections between grassroots operators and major players in the financial technology space.

These players include banks, Mobile Money Operators (MMOs), payment companies, super-aggregators, technology providers and other agency-banking stakeholders.

Beyond POS terminals

PAAIAN said the role of aggregators has moved beyond simply deploying POS terminals and processing transactions.

According to the association, aggregators now operate at the intersection of digital payments, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship and community-level economic activity, creating a need for stronger business structures, continuous capacity development, responsible practices and access to strategic opportunities.

To respond to these needs, PAAIAN said it plans to support members through professional development, technology adoption, innovation, compliance awareness, business opportunities, strategic partnerships and industry engagement.

The association also plans to establish a digital membership and service platform, alongside capacity-building programmes through its Academy and business and enterprise development initiatives through its Enterprise Hub.

It said technology-driven compliance and risk-management solutions will also form part of its broader digital ecosystem.
Focus on professional development
PAAIAN said the pre-launch is only the beginning of a wider programme rather than the final destination for the association.

Following the event, the association plans to advance its institutional development and begin rolling out initiatives intended to provide practical value to members and other participants in the ecosystem.

It also plans to deepen engagement with financial institutions, fintech companies, technology providers, professional institutions and other strategic partners.

According to PAAIAN, such partnerships could create opportunities for members in areas including training, digital solutions, business development, financial services, technology, compliance, market access and professional advancement.

The association also intends to continue developing its presence across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with the aim of strengthening communication, representation and participation within the ecosystem.

Preparing for a changing digital economy
The association said technological changes are also shaping the direction of the financial services industry, pointing to developments in artificial intelligence, data analytics, digital identity, automated compliance and embedded finance.

PAAIAN said it wants its members to be able to adapt to these changes through continuous learning, responsible innovation, digital transformation and sustainable enterprise development.

The association’s focus on technology comes against the backdrop of a changing regulatory environment for Nigeria’s agent-banking industry.

In October 2025, the Central Bank of Nigeria issued revised Guidelines for the Operations of Agent Banking in Nigeria, aimed at establishing minimum standards, strengthening financial inclusion, encouraging responsible market conduct and improving service quality.

The guidelines also recognise the increasing sophistication of agent banking as a result of technological advancement.

Agent banking has long been part of Nigeria’s financial-inclusion strategy, particularly as a means of taking financial services closer to communities where conventional banking infrastructure may be limited. The CBN identifies agent banking and digital financial services among the mechanisms for expanding access to financial services.

A call for wider collaboration

PAAIAN is also calling on financial institutions, fintech companies, technology providers, regulators, professional organisations, investors and development partners to engage with the association.

The association said it sees collaboration as central to building a more connected and professionally structured digital financial ecosystem.

Rather than operating in isolation, PAAIAN said its approach is based on partnerships and shared growth among stakeholders.

Speaking on the significance of the pre-launch, PAAIAN Chairman, Oba-Israel Olorunshina, said the initiative marks the beginning of a structured effort to create greater opportunities, professionalism, collaboration and innovation within Nigeria’s aggregator and fintech ecosystem.

He said the association is building a platform intended to connect people, businesses, technology and digital opportunities, while preparing members for the future of digital finance.

PAAIAN said the work would continue beyond the pre-launch as it moves into the next phase of developing its membership platform, Academy, Enterprise Hub, technology initiatives and partnerships across the financial technology ecosystem.
