The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards brought together some of the biggest names in music and entertainment, but before the awards were handed out, the red carpet had already stolen the spotlight.
Stars arriving at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday turned the VMAs carpet into a showcase of bold, dramatic and unconventional fashion.

The Return of the ‘Naked’ Dress
One of the most noticeable trends was the return of the sheer or so-called “naked” dress, with embellishments and intricate detailing adding glamour to the revealing designs.
British singer Raye arrived in a heavily embellished Georges Hobeika couture gown featuring silver beading and pearl-like details across sheer fabric. Chloe Bailey also embraced the trend in an intricate shimmering sheer ensemble, while BLACKPINK’s Lisa made a dramatic entrance in a fitted red dress paired with a statement coat.

Gothic Glamour and Theatrical Looks
The darker side of fashion was also prominent.
According to Vogue’s coverage, several stars leaned into a darker, almost gothic-inspired aesthetic. Charli XCX wore a black Saint Laurent look featuring a cropped top and low-rise skirt, while Teyana Taylor opted for a dramatic sheer black Zuhair Murad couture gown decorated with lace and feathers.
Adam Lambert also brought a theatrical touch to the carpet in an elaborate black satin look completed with a dramatic cape and headpiece.
New Stars, Big Statements
The fashion was not limited to established stars.
The carpet also featured younger and emerging artists including PinkPantheress, Sombr, Stella Lefty and others, reflecting the VMAs’ long-standing reputation for giving new artists an opportunity to make a visual statement.

Other celebrities spotted on the carpet included Tyla, Troye Sivan, Normani, Bebe Rexha, Shaboozey, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton.
The variety of looks once again demonstrated why the MTV VMAs red carpet remains different from many traditional awards shows. Rather than following a particular dress code, artists use the occasion to experiment with fashion, express their personalities and push the boundaries of conventional red-carpet dressing.
This year, that experimentation came through in different forms — from sparkling couture and sheer fabrics to gothic-inspired black looks and theatrical silhouettes.
As the music industry continues to merge with fashion and visual culture, the VMAs showed that what celebrities wear can become almost as much a part of the conversation as the awards themselves.
