The Dangote Petroleum Refinery public offer has recorded a surge of retail investor interest, with digital subscriptions surpassing the first-day levels previously recorded by MTN Nigeria and GTCO public offers.
The strong response is turning the ₦2.15 trillion offer into more than a major capital-market transaction. It is also becoming a test of how willing Nigerians are to own shares in a major local business and how easily first-time investors can access the Nigerian capital market.
One major reason for the rush is the low entry point. The offer is priced at ₦525 per share, while investors can start with just 10 shares, worth ₦5,250. The offer is for 4.1 billion ordinary shares and runs from September 14 to October 13, 2026.

The relatively small amount required to participate means the offer is accessible beyond traditional investors with large amounts of capital. The subscription has also been distributed through banks, fintech platforms and digital investment companies, putting the offer in front of millions of Nigerians who already use these platforms.
Digital access is another major driver. Investors can apply through a range of digital channels rather than relying only on traditional stockbrokers and physical bank branches. Platforms involved in the distribution include PiggyVest, Moniepoint, MTN MoMo, Bamboo, Paga, Flutterwave, Cowrywise and InvestNaija, alongside commercial banks.
The scale of the traffic became visible when some investment platforms experienced difficulties shortly after the offer opened. Bamboo, for example, recorded traffic more than 10 times its normal level within the first 30 minutes, while other digital investment platforms also reported difficulties as investors attempted to subscribe.

Then there is the Dangote factor. The refinery is already a highly visible part of Nigeria’s economy, producing petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and petrochemicals. The public offer therefore gives Nigerians the opportunity to buy into a business whose products and operations are already familiar to them.
The offer also contains an incentive for eligible retail investors. Investors who receive an allotment and continuously hold their shares for 12 months can qualify for an additional share at no extra cost, subject to the terms of the retail investor incentive programme.
The combination of a ₦5,250 minimum investment, widespread digital access, familiarity with the Dangote brand and the retail investor incentive has helped push the offer beyond the traditional stock-market audience.

The early response is particularly significant because the offer’s organisers have set an ambitious target of attracting 10 million investors. The first-day digital figures suggest that the offer has already reached a large number of retail investors, although the final number of subscribers will only become clear after the offer closes on October 13.
As more Nigerians attempt to participate, the IPO is also highlighting a growing demand for simple digital routes into the capital market. The immediate challenge for the platforms handling the offer is ensuring that the infrastructure can cope with the unusually high traffic.
For Nigerians considering the offer, however, the rush does not remove the need to understand the investment itself. The official IPO website advises investors to read the prospectus and use only approved subscription channels.
