A lawmaker representing Esan-South and Esan-North East Federal Constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Sergius Ogun, has commended the current leadership of National Assembly for passage of bills that impacted positively on the nation’s democracy as well as the lives of Nigerians
Hon. Ogun who praised the efforts of the legislature in Abuja while fielding questions from correspondents covering House of Representatives, further expressed the readiness of the legislators to use the short time left for them to make positive laws that will improve the lives of Nigerians.
The lawmaker further said that bills such as the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, as well as Electoral Act Amendment Bill are some of the landmark bills passed by the 9th National Assembly.
He posited that no country in the world has perfect laws, adding that lawmakers are always ready to amend any law whenever the needs arises.
The lawmaker further explained that some of Bills passed are now an Act and expressed the hope that the Bills would further deepen democracy and governance in the country.
He informed that a Bill to curb medical tourism in the country is on, adding that such Bill when passed into law will prevent Nigerians from embarking on medical tourism abroad.
He alleged that Medical tourism has cost the country billions of Naira.
According to the lawmaker, a Bill to prevent medical tourism would prevent public office holders from going abroad for medical treatment.
Hon. Ogun also used the opportunity to inform that a Bill to discourage public office holders from sending their children and wards to schools abroad is also on the underway, stating that the bill when passed is expected to help public office holders such as Minister of Education to think out of the box on how to improve the quality of education sector in Nigeria.
In conclusion, the lawmaker maintained that the essence of making laws in the country is to ensure positive impact and development saying that the 9th National Assembly leadership had made quality and people-oriented laws than preceding National Assemblies in the country.
Consequently, the lawmakers called on Nigerians to ensure emergence of credible leaders through their PVCs as 2023 election is in the offing.
