… Unveiling of the Mascot, draws for yearly tourney set for tomorrow, October 20

The Betsy Obaseki Football Tournament (BOWFT) 2023 is set to be an exciting women’s football competition featuring prominent teams from the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL), as the participating teams battle for the N60 million aggregate prize at the third edition of the competition.

The tournament will feature 13 teams, including Lagos-based Robo FC, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Naija Ratels, Nasarawa Amazons, Osun Babes, Confluence Queens, Fortress Ladies, Ekiti Babes, Remo Stars Ladies FC, and Heartland FC.

The Chairman, Communication Sub-Committee for the tournament, Crusoe Osagie, in a statement, said the 2023 competition, serves as a preseason competition to prepare and sharpen the participating teams for the Nigeria women’s league.

He further said, “There will be a press conference for the unveiling of the tournament’s mascot and the draws for the competition are scheduled to take place on Friday, October 20th, 2023”, emphasizing that the draws will hold in the full glare of the media to ensure credibility and transparency.”

The total prize money for the tournament is N60 million, which will be distributed among the overall winners, first runners-up, second runners-up, and other participating teams as consolation prizes.

The BOWFT 2023 is scheduled to take place between Monday, October 23rd, and Wednesday, November 1st, 2023.

“The third place and finals of the tournament will be played on Wednesday, 1st of November 2023 after which trophies and consolation prizes will be handed over to participating clubs as part of the closing ceremony.”

The matches will be hosted at four sports facilities in Benin City, Edo State, including the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, University of Benin Sports Complex, Western Boys Mini-Stadium, and the Edo State College of Nursing and Health Sciences Mini-Stadium.

Osagie said, one of the key objectives of the tournament is to raise awareness and generate public interest in the eradication of gender-based violence in all its forms. The event aims to spotlight the efforts made by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led State Government over the past seven years to combat gender-based violence in Edo State.

Importantly, it is noteworthy that the Betsy Obaseki Football Tournament is recognized by FIFA as a platform promoting women’s football worldwide, and it is expected to be an exciting event showcasing women’s football talent in Nigeria.
