The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has publicly released the full list of 16 officers of the Armed Forces of Nigeria indicted by a Special Investigative Panel for serious misconduct, including an alleged plot to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The disclosure was made on Monday, January 26, 2026, by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, who confirmed that the panel had completed its investigation and found sufficient grounds for the officers to face trial before a military Court Martial.

Major Gen. Uba stated: “The Special Investigative Panel examined the conduct of the officers and identified actions inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The process is purely disciplinary, aimed at preserving internal discipline, cohesion, and operational effectiveness.”

The arrests and indictments follow months of intelligence reports and internal investigations into alleged disloyalty and coup planning within the military. The DHQ has assured that the process will be fair, transparent, and in line with military justice procedures.

No further details on the specific allegations against each officer have been released at this time, as the matter is now sub judice before the Court Martial.

The development has sparked widespread reactions, with civil society groups calling for due process and transparency, while some political observers see it as part of ongoing efforts to secure loyalty within the armed forces ahead of 2027.
