In Nigeria, the pursuit of higher education is often a daunting task, especially for those who have to balance their academic responsibilities with other obligations or responsibilities of daily survival. Part time students, in particular, face a unique set of challenges that can make their academic journey an ordeal in its own class.

There are several reasons for choosing to do part-time studies. For instance, due to liquidity squeeze and downturn of national economies, some students opt for part time studies in order to have a flexible control of time and resources. While some may be working full time to support themselves or their families, others may have family responsibilities that prevent them from pursuing full time studies.

Other considerations like high cost of tuition fees and living expenses can make it difficult for students to afford full time education on stretch, together with some unforeseen residual costs.

It is sheer determination and hard work that propels many part-time students to cope with the common challenges inherent in the process and programme. For example, trying balance academic responsibilities with work or family obligations can be overwhelming. Part time students often have juggle between many tasks and in most cases, may require them to sacrifice their social lives and personal time to keep up with their studies.

Many part-time students often have to work or do business or side hustles to support themselves and this can directly impact their personal finances. The cost of textbooks, course materials, transportation, and other educational expenses can be a significant burden.

A key disadvantage is that part time students may not have access to the same resources as full-time students, such as libraries, computer labs, extra-curricular, in-presence mentoring and academic support services.

The foregoing reality may lead a part-time student to feel disconnected from peers or course mates and the university community, which can create a sense of aloneness and lack of participation perception.

Part-time students often encounter academic challenges related to time management, such as keeping up with assignments, coursework, and other school requirements that have strict deadlines.

By understanding these challenges and implementing supportive measures, universities and policymakers can help part-time students overcome their struggles and successfully achieve their academic goals.
