The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a free Artificial Intelligence (AI) Academy aimed at equipping Nigerians with advanced AI skills and positioning the country as a key player in the global digital economy. The initiative was inaugurated by Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, on Thursday, December 19, 2024, in Abuja.

The major highlight of the academy is that, it is collaborative effort and partnership between the Federal Government, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and Intel Corporation.
The target audience is specially drawn to encourage students, youths, and civil servants across Nigeria to participate in the program, which aims to empower participants with cutting-edge AI skills, ensuring competitiveness in the evolving AI-driven global economy.
The registration will commence on December 19, 2024 and end on January 30, 2025. The information notification urges interested individuals to register through the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology’s website.
Chief Nnaji emphasized the transformative nature of the program, stating, “The AI Academy is not just a training platform but a transformative opportunity to acquire critical AI skills.”

Self-paced courses covering AI fundamentals, ethics, tools, and applications.
Opportunities to compete for ambassadorial roles and internships with Intel Corporation.
Access to global, hands-on experience in AI-related fields.

Presently, there’s n ongoing review of Nigeria’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy by government departments and agencies (MDAs), to have unified national guidelines for deployment.
Part of the review was the formation of the AI Collective to foster research, innovation, and collaboration through hackathons and seminars.
The launch of a Large Language Model (LLM) designed to train AI in five low-resource languages and accented English, ensuring inclusivity in global AI datasets.
