A new political crisis has erupted in Rivers State after the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, announced on Thursdays, January 8, 2026, that a formal notice of impeachment will be served on Governor Siminalayi Fubara within the next seven days.

Amaewhule, who leads the faction of the Assembly loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, accused Fubara of gross misconduct, constitutional breaches, and failure to comply with legislative resolutions.

Speaking to journalists after a plenary session in Port Harcourt, the Speaker said the Assembly had exhausted all avenues for dialogue and was left with no option but to initiate impeachment proceedings in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution.

“The House has resolved to serve the Governor with impeachment notice within seven days. We have been patient enough, but governance cannot continue in defiance of the law,” Amaewhule stated.

The development escalates the long-running feud between Fubara and Wike, which has split the state Assembly into rival factions since late 2023, leading to parallel sittings, court battles, and political violence.

Governor Fubara’s camp has yet to respond officially, but sources close to the Government House described the move as “another desperate attempt to destabilise the state” and vowed to resist any unconstitutional action.

Political analysts warn that the impeachment threat could plunge Rivers into deeper chaos, especially with local government elections approaching and national attention on 2027 alignments.

Security has been beefed up around the Assembly complex and Government House amid fears of protests or clashes.

This is a developing story.
