The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken a significant step towards resolving the Oke-Oroma land dispute, inaugurating a Commission of Inquiry to determine the issues in context. This decision was disclosed during a meeting with community leaders, residents, and victims of demolished structures in Benin City.

The Commission’s terms of reference, includes investigating the issues surrounding the land dispute and provide recommendations to address the concerns of the affected parties. The Governo assured the people that if the investigation confirms the lands belong to them, the Certificates of Occupancy (CofO) previously issued to others will be revoked, and the lands returned to their rightful owners.
This move demonstrates the Governor’s commitment to addressing the land disputes, with a view to promoting justice and fairness in the state. The resolve is a follow-through on his campaign promise to the community, demonstrating his commitment to addressing genuine concerns of the Edo people.

The Commission will focus on resolving the current dispute by determining the rightful owners of the disputed lands and if any malpractice is identified in the issuance of Certificates of Occupancy (CofO) issued to individuals, it will cancel same, giving back the lands to the community.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized his administration’s zero tolerance for injustice, stating, “We hate injustice in this administration… We will listen to your voices.” This probe panel is a significant step towards resolving the dispute and providing relief to affected residents.
Furthermore, he disclosed that he has initiated probe into his predecessor’s administration, specifically the handling of the 7th Assembly and the inauguration of judges, to signpost his commitment to transparency and accountability in governance.

In recent times, the unending violence due to the Oke-Oroma land dispute has led many residents to flee their homes. The community has earlier dragged the Edo State government to court over the revocation of land titles.
