Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved an Advanced Leadership Training (ALT) initiative designed to be a comprehensive re-training program for senior officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). The aim is to empower them to acquire necessary leadership skills to enhance their capabilities, aligning the agency’s operations with international best practices.

The initiative, which commenced immediately, would enhance the command’s efficiency, promote professional development and ensure that traffic management in Lagos adheres to global standards. The program includes a series of workshops, strategic leadership modules and hands-on training sessions to equip officers with the skills needed to tackle the city’s complex traffic challenges effectively.

This refresher programme reflects Governor Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to improving urban mobility and public safety in Lagos, unarguably one of Africa’s most populous cities. According to official information, plans are also underway to extend similar training to mid-level LASTMA officers in the near future, ensuring a cohesive and world-class traffic management system across the state.

Many commuters on Lagos roads have commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for the measure, saying it would enable the senior officers to apprise themselves of global standards, which they, in turn can pass on to the junior cadre officers and of course, with the attendant image improvement.

Of recent, several motorists have lamented the menace of overzealous LASTMA officers who are ignorant of road safety rules and the psychological discretion required for civilized conduct in traffic administration.

The announcement has sparked a wave of reactions from Lagosians, with many expressing optimisms about the potential impact on the city’s notorious traffic congestion.

Aisha Mohammed, a businesswoman in Surulere, welcomed the initiative and urged swift implementation of new knowledge garnered from the training, noting sadly that, “Lagos traffic is a nightmare, and LASTMA officers are at the heart of it. If they can learn better ways to manage traffic and treat people with respect, it will make a big difference. But let’s see it happen quickly.”

However, the public opinion is mixed with many motorists expressing skepticism given the sordid history of rogue LASTMA officers who have harassed, lied, intimidated, confiscated vehicles under false allegations and exhorted money from commuters.

The retraining program has ignited hope among motorists, though many remain cautiously optimistic, hoping for genuine improvements in traffic management, officers’ conduct and a better commuting experience.
