Hadiza Isma, wife of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has strongly denied allegations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that wiretapping devices were recovered during a search of their Abuja residence.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, March 2, 2026, Hadiza Isma stated: “I was there. No such equipment was found. They lie. But why? An agency with no credibility at all.”

The ICPC had earlier claimed that suspected surveillance devices capable of intercepting confidential conversations and accessing classified security materials were retrieved during the raid on El-Rufai’s home. The operation took place in the presence of Hadiza and the couple’s son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai.
Family’s Official Statement Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, issued a detailed statement titled “ICPC’s Phantom Phone Tapping Equipment Allegations Against Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai and the Constitutional Right to Silence”.

The family described the ICPC’s claims as a “circus of chicanery” and accused the agency of fabricating evidence rather than following due process. Key points from the statement include:
Right to Silence: The ICPC allegedly misrepresented El-Rufai’s exercise of his constitutional right to remain silent as “non-cooperation.”
No Tapping Equipment Found: Only ordinary household items old personal mobile phones, laptops, and storage devices were seized. The family insisted no sophisticated wiretapping devices were present or recovered.
Alleged Forged Warrant: The search was carried out using a defective and possibly forged warrant, rendering the operation unlawful.
Credibility Concerns: The ICPC was accused of having a “credibility deficit” and operating under external influence to target political opponents.

The family confirmed that lawyers have been instructed to pursue all legal remedies, including challenging the search, the alleged forged warrant, and the ICPC’s public statements.
Context of the Ongoing Cases El-Rufai has been in custody since February 16, 2026, after voluntarily reporting to the EFCC. He was later transferred to ICPC custody. He faces: A 16-count money laundering charge involving approximately ₦9 billion (EFCC) and A separate five-count charge of terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms (DSS).

The ICPC’s wiretapping allegations are linked to El-Rufai’s February 13, 2026, appearance on Arise TV, where he claimed knowledge of someone intercepting NSA Nuhu Ribadu’s communications. The ICPC interpreted this as an admission of involvement.
The family’s rebuttal has intensified public debate on the politicisation of anti-corruption agencies, procedural fairness, and the rights of citizens under investigation.
