The House of Representatives has called on the relevant authorities in the nation’s education sector, particularly the National Universities Commission NUC, to suspend academic activities to provide students with the opportunity to get their permanent voter’s cards (PVCs) as well as participate fully in the general elections.
This was sequel to resolution of the lawmakers upon the adoption of a motion moved by Hon. Kabir Ibrahim at the plenary.
Debating his motion, Hon. Ibrahim stated that the scheduled school examination calendars did not take into consideration the timeline of elections in the country, stressing that it was the right of all students to get registered and vote for candidates of their choice during elections in the country.
He informed that students at present state in the country constitute up to 40 per cent of newly registered voters in states than where they are schooling.
The lawmaker further expressed worry that the students may not be able to collect their voters’ cards as most of their academic calendars were in various INEC registration points across the country.
During the debate on the motion most lawmakers who spoke supported the motion and was subsequently adopted by the whole House.
