An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated in the early hours of Wednesday, February 26, 2026, along the Gusau-Funtua highway in Zamfara State, severely damaging a cement-laden trailer and temporarily disrupting traffic flow.
The blast occurred around Unguwar Mai Chida village as the truck, travelling from Sokoto to Kaduna, passed through the area. The explosion targeted the front section of the vehicle, but the driver, identified as Dauda Adamu, was rescued alive with injuries.

Local sources and eyewitnesses suspect the IED was planted by terrorists operating in the region. A resident, Samaila, told DDNewsOnline that the incident happened just hours after a joint security team reopened the Kucheri-Danjibga-Keta road in Tsafe Local Government Area, which had been impassable for over a month due to multiple planted explosives.
Samaila noted that security forces had faced resistance during the clearance operation, leading to a prolonged exchange of gunfire. He suggested the device that struck the trailer may have been one of those initially laid to target military convoys.

Another eyewitness, commercial driver Lawali, said motorists who were nearby assisted in rescuing the injured driver from the wreckage. “Many drivers stopped and watched from afar until the Military and other security personnel arrived to secure and clear the road,” Lawali said. He described the blast as “extremely loud and panic-inducing,” causing widespread fear among travellers.
Police Confirmation Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said operatives from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were immediately deployed to the scene. “Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion. No life was lost, and the injured driver has been taken to hospital for treatment,” DSP Abubakar stated.

The Gusau-Funtua highway is a major commercial route linking Sokoto, Zamfara and Kaduna states. The highway has been repeatedly targeted by bandits and insurgents in recent years, leading to frequent closures, kidnappings and attacks on commuters.
Security Response Joint security forces, including the Nigerian Army and police, have since secured the area and cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and report suspicious movements along the corridor.
