The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and banks in Nigeria are blaming each other for the difficulties encountered by citizens due to the National Identity Number (NIN) requirements.

Many Nigerians are experiencing frustration with the system, leading to problems with their banking transactions. The issue appears to be with the aligning of data between NIMC and banks, resulting in delays and errors in the modification process.
The bank customers revealed that they are having trouble with banking transactions because of certain modifications including change of name, age, and gender, which they alleged are either slow or not popping up in their bank records. Others complain that the changes are repeated with even more errors on the NIMC website.
For instance, it appears that married women who have changed their maiden names are disproportionately affected by this issue. They are experiencing frustration when trying to update their names, dates of birth, and other information through the NIMC self-service NIN modifications portal.

The women experiencing this hiccups said when they visit their banks to carry out the modifications, they are told that NIMC’s portal still shows their old profiles, indicating that the modification was not completed successfully.
But a staff member not authorized to speak officially on behalf of NIMC, however, explained that all the banks need to do is to update their systems to sync with the new NIMC portal, just like some government departments like the Nigerian Immigration Service has done.
The blame game goes on and the people suffer. While the banks claim that NIMC is responsible for the issue, NIMC retorts that the banks are using outdated systems, emphasizing that their verification and authentication systems are working perfectly, urging the banks to update their portals to accommodate the modified data
To resolve this issue, NIMC recommends that banks update their servers to capture the changes made by citizens. In the meantime, individuals who have successfully modified their data can verify their updated profiles on the NIMC portal.

For easy modification NIN data, an applicant will need to provide supporting documents, such as a sworn affidavit, or marriage certificate. The process involves filling out a data modification form, which will be vetted by a NIMC official. Thereafter, one is required to pay a service fee, which varies depending on the type of modification.
