Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced that all workers in the state civil service and local government will receive a N10,000 monthly top-up on their salaries for at least the next three months, beginning April 2026, as a palliative measure to cushion the effects of the recent sharp increase in petrol prices. The governor made the disclosure during a public programme held in Ibadan, the state capital, on Monday, March 23, 2026.
According to Makinde: “I’m happy to announce that all workers in Oyo State and the local government, starting from April, at least for the first three months, will be given N10,000 in addition to their monthly salary as petrol/transportation support. All workers, everybody. It is a flat rate. Maybe it would be extended. “Those who are not working with the Oyo State government may also benefit from it. We will handle it properly to ensure it is all-inclusive.”

He further explained that the gesture is part of his administration’s focus on ensuring continuity and supporting residents amid rising living costs, particularly transportation expenses driven by the fuel price surge linked to global oil market volatility. “As I approach the end of my administration, one of the things I’m particularly focused on is ensuring continuity,” the governor added.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by labour unions, civil servants, and political stakeholders in the state, who described it as a timely intervention amid economic pressures. Details on the exact implementation mechanism, including whether it will extend to pensioners, teachers in private schools, or other categories of workers, are expected to be released soon by the state government.
