Pope Leo XIV, the head of catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City State has warned on Friday that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could harm the intellectual development of young people.

He expressed this concern in his message to the Second Rome Conference on Artificial Intelligence, explaining that while AI can be useful in healthcare and scientific research, it also poses risks to humanity’s ability to understand reality.

The Pope stated that youths are now relying on AI powered tools to access information and this could affect their intellectual and neurological development. He stressed that having access to a lot of data doesn’t necessarily mean someone is intelligent.

The Catholic Church has been promoting ethical thinking about AI, and in 2020, the Vatican initiated the Rome Call for AI Ethics. This call urges tech companies and governments to prioritize transparency and respect for privacy when developing and using AI.

Pope’s warning is particularly urgent because of the increasing issue of deep fake videos and audio content messages. These fakes can be very believable and have even been used to target Pope Leo himself and other public figures.
