The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, which took place around 2:00 a.m. and escalated into a major inferno that engulfed adjoining properties.

According to LASTMA and eyewitness accounts, the 20-tonne tipper truck travelling at a reportedly reckless speed from the Epe direction lost control and rammed into the rear of a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker that had failed to pull off the highway.

A nearby Total Petrol Filling Station and its fully loaded 33,000-litre PMS tanker were saved from the blaze due to swift intervention by emergency responders.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received the distress call at 02:36 a.m. and immediately deployed teams from Lekki Phase II, Oniru, and Epe II fire stations.

Controller-General of the Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed: “The driver of the tipper-lorry and his assistant, both male adults, were recovered burnt beyond recognition while the gas truck driver escaped unhurt.”

The fire was brought under control after several hours of intense firefighting. By 11:00 a.m., efforts were ongoing to clear the wreckage of both trucks and restore normal traffic flow.
